Frequently
Asked
Questions

What is exercise rehabilitation?

Exercise rehabilitation is a structured, clinically guided approach to restoring strength, mobility, function, and resilience after injury, surgery, or a period of deconditioning. At The Healing Theory, exercise rehabilitation is not a standalone service - it is an integral part of how our physiotherapists and chiropractors approach treatment. Rather than relying solely on passive hands-on therapy, our practitioners build personalized exercise programs designed to address the root cause of your problem and ensure your results last.

Which practitioners provide exercise rehabilitation at the clinic?

Exercise rehabilitation is delivered primarily through our physiotherapy and chiropractic practitioners, each of whom integrates therapeutic exercise as a core component of their treatment approach. Depending on your condition and goals, your program may be progressed in-clinic during appointments and supplemented with a home exercise plan between sessions. For patients who also use the clinic's studio, instructors can be briefed to support rehabilitation goals within class settings where appropriate.

How is exercise rehabilitation different from going to the gym on my own?

The difference is in clinical precision. A gym program is designed for general fitness. Exercise rehabilitation is designed for your specific injury, your specific movement deficits, and your specific recovery timeline. Your practitioner identifies exactly which structures are involved, what movement patterns need to be retrained, and how to progressively load your body in a way that promotes healing rather than aggravating the problem. Getting this wrong - loading too much, too soon, in the wrong pattern - is one of the most common reasons injuries become chronic.

What conditions benefit from exercise rehabilitation?

Exercise rehabilitation is appropriate for a wide range of conditions including post-surgical recovery, sports injuries, chronic back and neck pain, joint replacements, rotator cuff injuries, ACL and other ligament rehabilitation, disc injuries, osteoarthritis management, balance and falls prevention, and general deconditioning following illness or a period of inactivity. It is also highly effective as a preventive measure for active individuals who want to address weaknesses or imbalances before they become injuries.

Will I be expected to exercise if I'm currently in pain?

Your program will always be designed around what your body can tolerate at each stage of recovery. In the early phases of rehabilitation, exercises are typically gentle, low-load, and focused on restoring basic movement patterns rather than building strength. Progression happens gradually and is guided by how your body responds. Pain is always taken seriously as feedback - your practitioner will never push you through pain that isn't appropriate for your stage of recovery.

Do I need to come into the clinic for every session or can I do exercises at home?

Both. In-clinic sessions are used to assess your progress, refine your technique, progress your program, and apply any hands-on treatment that complements your rehabilitation. Between sessions, a home exercise program keeps the work progressing day to day. The balance between in-clinic and home-based work shifts as you improve - most patients need more frequent in-clinic contact early in rehabilitation and transition to more independent work as they build confidence and capacity.

How long does exercise rehabilitation take?

Recovery timelines vary considerably depending on the nature and severity of your condition, how long you've had it, your age, and how consistently you engage with your program. A straightforward acute injury might resolve within 6 to 10 sessions. Post-surgical rehabilitation for a major joint can take 3 to 6 months or longer. Your practitioner will give you a realistic timeline at the outset and adjust it based on your progress.

Can exercise rehabilitation work alongside studio classes at The Healing Theory?

Yes, and this combination can be particularly effective. Depending on where you are in your recovery, studio classes - particularly Pilates - can be an excellent complement to a rehabilitation program, supporting strength, mobility, and body awareness in a supervised group setting. Your practitioner can communicate with the studio instructors to ensure the class environment supports rather than conflicts with your rehabilitation goals.
