Frequently
Asked
Questions

What counselling services does The Healing Theory offer?

We offer both psychotherapy with a registered psychotherapist and counselling with a registered social worker. While the two designations come from different professional training backgrounds, both provide evidence-based talk therapy in a confidential, supportive setting. The right fit depends more on your specific concerns and personal connection with the therapist than on the designation itself. A free 15-minute screening call is the best way to figure out which practitioner and approach is right for you.

What is the difference between a psychotherapist and a social worker?

Both are trained mental health professionals who provide talk therapy, and there is significant overlap in what they do and who they help. Registered psychotherapists are specifically trained in therapeutic modalities - such as cognitive behavioural therapy, narrative therapy, and mindfulness-based approaches - with a focus on the therapeutic process itself. Registered social workers bring training that also encompasses a broader understanding of how life circumstances, systems, and environments shape mental health. In practice, both can support a wide range of concerns effectively, and the quality of the therapeutic relationship matters more than the designation.

What issues can counselling help with?

Our counselling practitioners support a wide range of concerns including anxiety, depression, stress and burnout, relationship difficulties, life transitions, grief and loss, trauma, low self-esteem, work-life balance challenges, postpartum adjustment, and the complex demands of balancing career and family life. You don't need to be in crisis to benefit - many people seek support simply to better understand themselves and build resilience.

How do I know if I need therapy or just need to talk things through?

If something is affecting your daily life, your relationships, your work, or how you feel about yourself, therapy is worth considering. You don't need to reach a breaking point before seeking support - in fact, addressing concerns earlier tends to produce better outcomes. A free 15-minute screening call is available to help you figure out whether counselling is the right fit and which of our practitioners is best suited to what you're going through.

What can I expect in a first counselling session?

Your first session is primarily about getting to know each other. Your practitioner will ask about what's brought you to therapy, your background, and what you're hoping to get out of the process. There's no pressure to share more than you're comfortable with - building trust takes time and that's entirely normal. By the end of the first session you'll have a clearer sense of how working together could help and what the path forward might look like.

Is everything I share in therapy confidential?

Yes, with very limited exceptions required by law. Both our psychotherapist and social worker are bound by professional ethical standards that protect the confidentiality of everything you share. The exceptions - which are narrow and specific - involve situations of imminent risk of harm to yourself or others, or in certain legal circumstances. Your practitioner will explain the limits of confidentiality clearly at the start of your first session.

How long does therapy take?

There is no universal answer, and a good practitioner won't promise one. Some people find significant benefit in 6 to 12 sessions focused on a specific concern. Others engage in longer-term work to address deeper patterns or ongoing life challenges. What matters most is that progress is real and the work feels meaningful. You and your practitioner will regularly revisit your goals and assess whether the approach is working.

Is counselling covered by insurance

Coverage depends on your specific plan and which designation your provider covers. Many extended health benefit plans cover registered psychotherapy, registered social work, or both - but the terminology varies by insurer. We recommend checking your plan details carefully, as some plans list these services under different categories. Our front desk team can help with any direct billing questions.

Can I see a counsellor at The Healing Theory alongside other treatments I'm receiving at the clinic?

Yes, and the multidisciplinary nature of the clinic makes this particularly valuable. Mental and physical health are deeply connected - stress and anxiety can drive physical symptoms, and chronic pain or illness can significantly affect mental wellbeing. Our practitioners can coordinate care where appropriate, and patients working with both a counsellor and another practitioner at the clinic often find the combination more effective than either alone.
