Frequently
Asked
Questions

What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is a regulated health profession that takes a whole-person approach to health - looking at the root causes of illness rather than just managing symptoms. At The Healing Theory, our naturopathic doctors combine evidence-informed natural therapies with conventional diagnostic tools to create personalized treatment plans. This might include nutrition and lifestyle counselling, herbal medicine, supplements, hormonal support, lab testing, and more - all tailored to what your body specifically needs.

What conditions do naturopathic doctors treat?

Our naturopathic doctors work with a wide range of conditions including hormonal imbalances, thyroid disorders, digestive issues like IBS and SIBO, chronic fatigue, autoimmune conditions, skin concerns like acne and eczema, anxiety and mood disorders, fertility support, weight management, and general preventive health. If you're managing a chronic condition that hasn't fully resolved with conventional treatment, or simply want a more thorough look at your overall health, naturopathic medicine is worth exploring.

How is a naturopathic doctor different from my family doctor?

Naturopathic doctors and medical doctors have distinct but complementary roles. Your family doctor is essential for diagnosis, emergency care, and prescription medications. A naturopathic doctor spends significantly more time with you - initial appointments are typically 60 to 90 minutes - and focuses on identifying contributing factors that may not be addressed in a standard medical appointment, such as nutrition, gut health, stress, sleep, and hormonal patterns. Naturopathic care works best alongside your existing medical care, not instead of it.

Do I need a referral to see a naturopathic doctor?

No referral is needed. You can book directly online or by phone. Many patients come to naturopathic medicine on their own initiative, often after finding that conventional approaches haven't fully resolved a chronic issue. If you'd like to talk with one of our naturopathic doctors before committing to a full appointment, both Dr. Karin and Dr. James offer a free 15-minute meet-and-greet.

Is naturopathic medicine covered by insurance?

Naturopathic medicine is covered by many extended health benefit plans in Ontario. Coverage amounts vary by plan, so we recommend checking your benefits before your first visit. Our front desk team can help with any questions about direct billing.

What does a first naturopathic appointment look like?

Your initial appointment is typically 60 to 90 minutes. Your naturopathic doctor will take a comprehensive health history covering your current concerns, past medical history, diet and lifestyle, sleep, stress, and any medications or supplements you're currently taking. Depending on your presentation, they may recommend lab testing, provide dietary guidance, or begin a treatment protocol in the first visit. You'll leave with a clear picture of your health priorities and a plan to address them.

Can naturopathic medicine work alongside my existing medications or treatments?

Yes, and our naturopathic doctors are trained to consider potential interactions between natural therapies and pharmaceutical medications. Always let your naturopathic doctor know everything you're currently taking. The goal is always a complementary approach that supports your overall care rather than working against it.

How long before I notice results from naturopathic treatment?

This depends on your condition and how long you've been dealing with it. Some patients notice meaningful changes within a few weeks, particularly with acute concerns or dietary shifts. Chronic conditions that have been present for months or years typically require a longer treatment period - progress is real but takes time. Your naturopathic doctor will set realistic expectations at the outset and track your progress at each visit.
