Frequently
Asked
Questions

What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is one of the world's oldest healthcare systems, with over 2,000 years of clinical history. It encompasses acupuncture, herbal medicine, cupping, gua sha, and dietary therapy - all guided by an understanding of how energy and function flow through the body. At The Healing Theory, our TCM practitioner integrates this traditional framework with a modern clinical approach to address both the symptoms you're experiencing and the underlying imbalances driving them.

What is acupuncture and how does it work?

Acupuncture involves the precise insertion of very fine, sterile needles at specific points on the body. From a Western scientific perspective, acupuncture stimulates the nervous system, promotes circulation, reduces inflammation, and triggers the release of the body's natural pain-relieving compounds. From a TCM perspective, it regulates the flow of qi through the body's meridian pathways. In practice, both frameworks point toward the same outcomes - reduced pain, improved function, and better overall balance.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Most patients are surprised by how comfortable acupuncture is. The needles used are extremely fine - far thinner than a hypodermic needle - and insertion is typically painless or produces only a brief, mild sensation. Once the needles are placed, most patients feel deeply relaxed, and many fall asleep during treatment. If you have concerns about needles or discomfort, let your practitioner know before your session - there are always options to adjust the approach.

What conditions does acupuncture treat?

Acupuncture is recognized as effective for a wide range of conditions including chronic and acute pain, headaches and migraines, stress and anxiety, insomnia, digestive disorders, menstrual irregularities and PMS, fertility support, nausea, allergies, and fatigue. It is also used as a complementary support for patients undergoing conventional medical treatment. If you're unsure whether your specific concern is a good fit, a free 15-minute meet-and-greet is the best place to start.

What is cosmetic acupuncture?

Cosmetic acupuncture is a specialized application of acupuncture that targets the face, neck, and scalp to improve skin tone, reduce the appearance of fine lines, and promote a more even complexion. It works by stimulating collagen production and improving circulation to the skin. Results are cumulative - most patients notice meaningful improvement after a series of treatments. It is a natural, non-invasive alternative to more aggressive cosmetic procedures.

What is cupping and what is it used for?

Cupping involves placing specialized cups on the skin to create gentle suction, drawing blood flow to the area and releasing tension in the underlying tissue. It is particularly effective for muscle tightness, back and shoulder pain, respiratory congestion, and stress. The temporary circular marks it can leave on the skin are not bruises - they are a normal response showing where circulation has been increased, and they typically fade within a few days.

How many acupuncture sessions will I need?

The number of sessions depends on your condition and how long you've been dealing with it. Acute conditions often respond within 4 to 6 sessions. Chronic or complex conditions typically benefit from a longer course of treatment, often once or twice weekly to start before moving to a maintenance schedule. Your practitioner will give you a realistic treatment plan at your first appointment.

Is TCM and acupuncture covered by insurance?

Acupuncture and TCM services are covered by many extended health benefit plans in Ontario. Coverage varies by provider and plan, so we recommend checking your specific benefits before your appointment. Our front desk team can assist with any direct billing questions.
