Frequently
Asked
Questions

What is perinatal and postnatal care at The Healing Theory?

Perinatal care refers to support during pregnancy, and postnatal care covers the period after birth. At The Healing Theory, we offer a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to this stage of life - meaning you can access physiotherapy, massage therapy, naturopathic medicine, acupuncture, dietitian services, and counselling all under one roof, with practitioners who communicate and collaborate on your care. Pregnancy and the postpartum period place significant demands on the body and mind, and having a team that understands the full picture makes a meaningful difference.

Which practitioners support perinatal and postnatal patients at the clinic?

Several of our practitioners work with pregnant and postpartum patients as part of their regular practice. Depending on your specific needs, this might include physiotherapy for pelvic floor support, back and hip pain, and postpartum rehabilitation; massage therapy for pain relief, swelling, and stress; naturopathic medicine for hormonal support, fatigue, and nutritional needs; acupuncture for nausea, sleep, and labour preparation; dietitian services for prenatal and postnatal nutrition; and counselling for perinatal anxiety, postpartum adjustment, and the emotional demands of new parenthood. Your care team will be matched to your specific needs and stage of pregnancy or recovery.

Is it safe to receive treatment during pregnancy?

Yes, when provided by trained practitioners who are experienced working with pregnant patients. All of our practitioners who see perinatal patients are experienced in adapting their techniques and approaches to the specific needs and contraindications of pregnancy. Let us know at the time of booking that you are pregnant so we can ensure everything is set up appropriately for your appointment.

What are the most common reasons pregnant patients come to the clinic?

The most common presentations we see during pregnancy include low back pain, pelvic girdle pain, sciatica, round ligament pain, hip discomfort, carpal tunnel symptoms, headaches, nausea, fatigue, sleep difficulties, swelling, and anxiety. Many patients also seek proactive support - optimizing nutrition, building strength and mobility in preparation for labour, and establishing a care team before symptoms become significant.

What postnatal concerns can the clinic help with?

The postnatal period brings its own distinct set of physical and emotional demands. We commonly support patients with postpartum pelvic floor recovery, diastasis recti rehabilitation, scar tissue management following caesarean or perineal tears, back and neck pain from feeding and carrying positions, postpartum fatigue and sleep deprivation, hormonal imbalances, postpartum anxiety and depression, and the general physical deconditioning that follows delivery. Recovery after birth deserves the same attention and care as recovery from any significant physical event.

How soon after birth can I start treatment?

This depends on the type of treatment and your individual recovery. Massage therapy and counselling can typically begin very soon after birth. Physiotherapy for pelvic floor assessment is generally recommended from around 6 weeks postpartum, though this varies. Naturopathic and dietitian support can begin as soon as you're ready. Your practitioners will always work within what's appropriate for your stage of recovery and give you clear guidance on timing.

Do all of your studio classes accommodate pregnant patients?

Yes. All classes offered in The Healing Theory studio are designed to be pregnancy-safe. If you have specific concerns or are in a later stage of pregnancy, speak with the instructor before class so they can offer any relevant modifications.

Is perinatal and postnatal care covered by insurance?

Coverage depends on which specific services you receive. Physiotherapy, massage therapy, naturopathic medicine, acupuncture, dietitian services, and counselling are each covered to varying degrees by most extended health benefit plans. Our front desk team can help clarify what applies to your specific plan and assist with direct billing.
