Meet Your Registered Dietitian at The Healing Theory

Frequently
Asked
Questions

What does a registered dietitian do?

A registered dietitian is a regulated health professional with specialized training in nutrition science and its clinical application. At The Healing Theory, our dietitian works with patients to develop practical, evidence-based nutrition strategies tailored to their specific health goals, medical conditions, and lifestyle. This goes well beyond general healthy eating advice - it's personalized guidance grounded in your health history, lab results, and what's actually realistic for your life.

What conditions or goals can a dietitian help with?

Our dietitian supports a wide range of health goals and conditions including weight management, digestive disorders like IBS and Crohn's disease, diabetes and blood sugar regulation, heart health and cholesterol management, food allergies and intolerances, eating concerns, sports nutrition and performance, hormonal health, prenatal and postnatal nutrition, and general preventive health. If you're unsure whether your specific concern is a good fit, a free 15-minute meet-and-greet is the best place to start.

How is a dietitian different from a nutritionist?

In Ontario, the title "registered dietitian" is protected by law and requires a university degree in nutrition, a supervised internship, and registration with the College of Dietitians of Ontario. The title "nutritionist" is not regulated in Ontario, meaning anyone can use it regardless of their training or qualifications. When you see a registered dietitian, you can be confident you're receiving care from a credentialed professional accountable to a regulatory college.

Do I need a referral to see a dietitian?

No referral is needed. You can book directly online or by phone. That said, if your family doctor or another practitioner has recommended dietitian support for a specific condition, let us know at booking so your dietitian has the relevant context before your first appointment.

Is dietitian care covered by insurance?

Registered dietitian services are covered by many extended health benefit plans. Coverage varies by employer and plan, so we recommend checking your specific benefits before your first visit. Our front desk team can help with direct billing questions.

What happens at a first dietitian appointment?

Your first appointment is a comprehensive nutrition assessment. Your dietitian will review your health history, current eating patterns, lifestyle, goals, and any relevant lab work or medical history. From there, you'll work together to establish clear, realistic priorities and a plan that fits your life. The goal is never a rigid diet to follow perfectly - it's a sustainable approach that actually works for you over the long term.

Will I be put on a strict diet?

No. Our dietitian takes a flexible, non-restrictive approach to nutrition that focuses on building healthy habits rather than following rigid rules. The evidence consistently shows that overly prescriptive diets are difficult to maintain and often counterproductive over time. Expect practical, realistic guidance that you can integrate into your actual life - not a meal plan that requires you to overhaul everything at once.

Can I see the dietitian alongside other practitioners at the clinic?

Absolutely, and this combination is often particularly effective. Nutrition plays a role in nearly every aspect of health, and our dietitian works well alongside naturopathic medicine, physiotherapy, and counselling depending on your goals. For example, patients working with a naturopathic doctor on hormonal or digestive health often find that adding dietitian support accelerates their progress meaningfully.
